Response to the human search for meaning
Like all religions, the Greek religion attempted to provide the people a reason for their existence, and hope that there was more to life than simply birth or death. It showed humans that they weren’t alone in the universe, and perhaps more importantly, that they were accountable to someone for their actions. The prospect of eternity in Tartarus was a strong deterrent. In the same manner, people were driven to do good by the fact that the gods were judging their actions.
Though the religion varied slightly from region to region, it answered one of the most important questions humanity asks itself, the question of our very existence, and that of the world around us. Through their creation myth, we can see a curious people coming to terms with the reality of the universe in the best way they know, through story and supernatural beings. The story creates an explanation for every part of existence, from the sky and seas to lightning and even musical instruments. The Greek creation myth, and the wider religion is a natural response to the search for human meaning and served to satiate the spiritual needs of the community.
